Panchakarma: the art of inner cleansing

Panchakarma (the five actions) is Ayurveda's most profound detoxification and rejuvenation protocol. At Ayurharsha, we follow the unbroken lineage of Dr. Lakshmaiah Sharma — each therapy is adapted to your prakruti, yet remains faithful to the classical texts.

The five karmas (main procedures)

Three generations of vaidyas have refined these therapies — they are the heart of our healing legacy.

Vamana

वमन · emesis

Therapeutic vomiting to eliminate kapha toxins from the stomach and respiratory tract. Ideal for asthma, skin diseases, and congestion.

Virechana

विरेचन · purgation

Controlled purgation to flush pitta‑related toxins from the small intestine. Excellent for liver disorders, hyperacidity, and inflammatory conditions.

Basti

बस्ति · enema

Medicated enemas (oil‑based & decoction) that pacify vata and nourish deep tissues. The most powerful panchakarma for neurological, joint, and degenerative disorders.

Nasya

नस्य · nasal medication

Administration of herbal oils or powders through the nose. It clears kapha from the head, relieves sinusitis, migraine, and strengthens sense organs.

Raktamokshana

रक्तमोक्षण · blood letting

Gentle removal of impure blood (via leech or venesection) to treat skin diseases, gout, and chronic infections. Used only when indicated and with utmost care.

Dr. Ramamurthy Peteti (2nd gen) dedicated his life to standardizing the puta counts for basti and the preparation of virechana formulations. His research ensures that every panchakarma we offer is both safe and deeply effective — exactly as the classics intended.

The journey: pūrva · pradhāna · paścāt

Authentic panchakarma is a three‑stage process — preparation, main action, and post‑care. We guide you through each step.

1

Pūrva Karma

Preparation (oleation & fomentation): Internal & external oiling (snehana) followed by sweating (swedana). This loosens toxins and moves them from tissues into the gastrointestinal tract. At Ayurharsha we use lineage‑specific oils prepared with 3rd‑gen bhasma infusions.

2

Pradhāna Karma

Main procedure: One of the five karmas (vamana, virechana, basti, nasya or raktamokshana) is administered under strict supervision. Dr. Sambasiva Rao personally monitors your pulse (nadi pareeksha) throughout to ensure safety and maximal benefit.

3

Paścāt Karma

Post‑therapy & rejuvenation: Special diet, herbal rasayanas, and lifestyle guidelines to rebuild immunity and prevent re‑toxification. This phase is as crucial as the main therapy — we remain with you until complete recovery.

The entire cycle typically lasts 7 to 21 days, depending on your condition and the chosen karma.

Why Ayurharsha for Panchakarma?

It is not just a procedure — it is a handed‑down ritual.

Unbroken lineage

Dr. Lakshmaiah’s original panchakarma diaries (1920s) are still consulted. Every basti and virechana follows his annotations.

In‑house bhasmas

We prepare our own medicated oils and mineral compounds (abrak bhasma, swarna makshika) under the strict puta system taught by Dr. Ramamurthy.

Pulse & tongue mapping

Dr. Sambasiva’s nadi pareeksha determines the exact stage of toxin accumulation — we never apply a standard protocol.

Post‑care integration

You receive a personalized diet and rasayana plan to consolidate the benefits — just as the first generation prescribed.

A thorough consultation with Dr. Sambasiva will determine the appropriate karma for your constitution. Only after nadi pareeksha and medical history do we design your protocol.
